Reinhardt Jünemann: leading material flow expert and co-founder of industrial logistics
Professor Dr.-Ing. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Dr. h.c. Reinhardt Jünemann (*1936) is considered the leading German expert for material flows in the second half of the 20th century. He was inducted into the Logistics Hall of Fame in 2009 in recognition of his outstanding pioneering achievements as one of the key figures in the development of industrial logistics.

Merits
- In 1971/72, Emeritus Professor Dr.-Ing. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Dr. h.c. Reinhardt Jünemann was the first holder of the new Chair of Conveying and Storage Systems at the University of Dortmund. He founded the Fraunhofer Institute for Transport Technology and Goods Distribution, and headed the Institute until 2000. Under his leadership, what is today the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) gained its reputation as one of the leading research establishments in the logistics field.
- The institutions headed by Jünemann and their partner companies generated key stimuli for automatic material flow systems and simulation technology as well as for the use of information and communication technology in logistics. This paved the way for important developments in intralogistics, including automatic shelf stackers and automated forklift control systems, robots for palletising tasks or the Dortmund-based simulator for material flow systems.
- There are over 30 companies in North Rhine-Westphalia with around 1,000 employees whose existence can be traced back to the Fraunhofer Institute or the University Chair.
- In addition, to conducting research, Jünemann also did a great deal to further the training and education of logisticians at the highest level. In his department, he was the moving force behind the creation of the add-on study course for commercial management in the logistics field in 1988 and the degree course in Logistics in 1998/99.
